Tax Deduction or Collection Account Number is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income-tax department. TAN is required to obtain by all who are responsible for collecting tax (TCS) or deducting tax (TDS). DealTax has got detailed information on TAN as to when and how to get TAN.
Compliance after getting TAN
If the 10-digit alphanumeric TAN number is not quoted by eligible persons at requisite places, they can face the prospect of paying a penalty of Rs.10,000 under Section 272BB(1). If a wrong TAN is provided, the same penalty is imposed on the applicant under Section 272BB.
How to get TAN Online
TAN can be obtained both ways online and offline. It is an easy process to get TAN online.
Under the ‘Services’ dropdown of https://www.tin-nsdl.comchoose TAN.
Select New TAN after clicking ‘Apply online’.
The page will direct you to Form 49b after selecting it from the list of ‘Category of deductors’.
How to apply offline
A deductor may also submit physical TAN Application to any TIN-Facilitation Center (TIN-FC) of NSDL. Applicants may obtain the application forms from TIN-FCs, any other vendors providing such forms.

Fee for TAN
The processing fee for both the applications (new TAN and change request) is INR 65 (including Goods and Service Tax).
On confirmation, an acknowledgment screen is displayed which contains the following:
- 14-digit acknowledgment number
- Name of the applicant
- Status of the applicant
- Contact details
- Payment details
- Space for signature
The applicant is required to save the acknowledgment and get a printout of it. The printout of the acknowledgment along with other documents is required to be sent to NSDL at – NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited
Requirement of Documents along with TAN application
No documents are required to be submitted along with the application for allotment of TAN. However, where the application is being made online, the signed acknowledgment which is generated after filling up the form should be forwarded to NSDL e-Gov. Track the status of New TAN
You can inquire about the status of your application by accessing the NSDL e-Gov -TIN website at the option and quoting your unique 14-digit acknowledgment number after three days of your application date.
